My career experience with addiction spans three decades and culminated with my appointment as a Senior Nurse consulting at The Sanctuary in Byron Bay. At the time, this was the most exclusive and expensive addiction treatment clinic in the world, whose clientele included Hollywood stars, royalty and billionaires. Whilst this clinic reported high success rates with getting people off their addiction, they lacked a coaching program to support preventing people from relapsing.

It was a busy afternoon in the Emergency Department of the Gold Coast Hospital when the doors to the trauma bay flung open and in scurried the paramedics with the first multi-trauma case of the shift. Some unfortunate soul had been involved in a high-speed motor vehicle accident and sustained multiple, life-threatening injuries.

The current definitions for psychological and emotional trauma are too narrow and fail to capture the range of conditions and symptoms that can result from life’s distressing events. To exclude “mental distress” and “suffering” from the definition of trauma is analogous to excluding berries and citrus from the definition of fruit. We need to rethink our definition of psychological and emotional trauma and expand it. It is my contention that psychological trauma is far more prevalent and ubiquitous than we can measure.
